How to Bring Your Gun to a Range
Bringing Your Own Firearm to a Gun Range
If you’re a gun owner, you should be training with your firearm as much as you can to practice your shooting skills and familiarize yourself with your firearms. That being said, you may want to take your firearm to a gun range but maybe don’t know how to properly transport your firearm. Here are some tips on how to properly bring your own firearm to a gun range.
Local and State Laws
Check your local laws and any laws of states which you travel through to ensure you are legally allowed to own and carry a firearm. Some states, such as MA, require you to have a license to carry.
Transport Your Firearm Safely
If you are comfortable carrying your firearm on yourself then you can do so (check local/state laws). If not, you should transport your firearm unloaded and stored in a secure gun safe.
Follow the Rules of the Gun Range
Each gun range has its own set of rules so it is important to familiarize yourself with these before you visit. You can find our range rules here.
Handle Your Firearm Responsibly
Always keep the muzzle of your firearm pointed in a safe direction, down range, and keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot. If you need to handle your firearm at the range, make sure you do so in a safe controlled manner.
Know How to Properly Shoot Your Firearm
If you are not comfortable shooting your firearm or are not familiar with its operation, consider taking a firearm safety course, such as our Basic Firearm Safety, before shooting on your own.
Have Fun
Safety is always the number one rule in shooting but it is also important to have fun. Shooting at a public range can be intimidating but almost anyone will be more than happy to help you out if you ask them!
